Foxes....and Chrommagus, i guess

[:1]Tamed Chrommagus, and decided to use him instead of my current fox.

While I was testing both of their dps on the dummies, I noticed something that i couldn't explain...

Some backround...

-I removed all gear and abilities that would proc random bonuses or buffs.
-Both pets were using bite. (Along with the core hound's lava breath, and the foxes tailspin)
Which means I removed call of the wild, and didn't use the core hound's bloodlust.

Both my corehound and fox have the exact same stats...
Damage= 855-918
DPS= 535.6
Attack Power= 2766
Attack Speed=1.66

The core hound ended up averaging out 875.8 dps after 5 attempts, all of which were two minutes long.

The fox end up averaging out at 335.7 dps after the same time and number of attempts.

So, the question....Why does the core hound do so much more damage than the fox? Is Chrommagus just bugged , or do foxes just kinda suck?

Let me know if I'm missing something or if I'm just being stupid. All feedback is appreciated.

This may sound like a dumb question, so forgive me for asking. Did you spec them both the same way as well? It's possible you forgot to finalized talents in the fox's talent tree.
Did you test them on the same dummy? Were there any debuffs present when you tested with the core hound that weren't there when you tested with the fox?

Sorry I didn't mention that before, but yes they were both the same exact spec. (Both ferocity too)

And no, no debuffs were present on the dummy during either testing.
Core hound is a BM only pet. This seems a pretty big disparity, but I expect the core hound to be somewhat better.

Also the foxes debuff works for everyone, so it is illogical that it would improve the fox damage hugely. Your damage and the raids against the same boss, in other words, would all get the benefit.

But wouldn't the stat change of an exotic pet show up on it's character screen?
I don't know. I thought he was talking about the damage he saw on his recount.

The damage i was referring to was the damage displayed in your character screen, under the pets tab.
Just tested my devilaur out, and it produced roughly the same numbers as the fox.

Another interesting bit of info....

Both the devilsaur and the fox did roughly 4,800 damage worth of melee auto attacks. They also did roughly 20,000 damage with their bite abilities.

The core hound, on the other hand, did 28,500 worth of melee damage, and 20,000 worth of bite damage.

All three pets had around the same amount of successful melee attacks, and bite attacks.

Is it possible that Chrommagus just does more auto attack damage, even though it isn't displayed in his character stat screen?
Try testing Chro against a regular core hound. That should clear up if this is an Exotic issue or a Chro issue.
Ok so I just got Chromaggus and tested this. These were all on lvl 80 dummy, normal attacks with pet self buffs 1 minute tests.

Chromaggus = 61067 damage 1075.1 DPS avg

SianRotam(cat) = 68004 damage 1024.8 DPS avg

Ashtail(fox) = 93627 damage 1179 DPS avg

Not sure about your findings but my test shows foxes are awesome.
On a side note, when I switch to MM, the cat smashes the fox.
Just sayin, all pets should do the same amount of damage. There was a bug with the onset of 4.0.1 that causes exotics to do more damage but that has since then been fixed.

If you did longer tests (5minutes +) you will see their damage equalize. The longer the test, the more accurate.

Also, your cat probably does more damage than the Fox because the fox does not have a self buff ability, however the cat does. Perform tests without the debuffs/buffs toggled on as well as growl toggled off.
That's the whole point though, in a PVE situation they are going to have all their abilities going so I am testing which one is going to do the best. These were just short tests to see if the results were the same to the OP's issue.
True, but there is no longer a "best".

I mean, if you want a best. Tame a cunning pet for fights that last longer than 5 minutes I believe. They will out perform ferocity.
I'd say it could have to do with what abilities of the pet you have turned on (or that turned on inadvertently). If one pet is generating more focus then they other, they will have more focus to use Bite or w/e or more Ferocity Procs.

There should be 0 difference but who knows. RNG crit streams procing more focus for the pet could be playing a role. Look at your crit and focus gains and see if they are about equal.

Test each one 10 times for 5 minutes each (I used the cooldown of Rapid Fire as my start and stop) and then average that dps together from each trial per pet. See where it comes out.

I know that seems like a lot of testing, but with the RNG game, if you're getting bad RNG on one pet, their dps might be lower. 1 minute tests will give you a good idea of burst potential, but it won't give you an accurate picture because most fights last longer than 1 minute and you need to give your crit stream time to flow.

edit - Just read Weazel's post. yea, like I said, (and he said) 5 minute tests for each pet will give you a better picture of overall dps. On top of that, you need to make sure you do enough 5 minute test to get a good sample. 1 test is just a crap shoot imo because there is too much RNG with Crit streams and % procs.

I don't have Chrom, but I tested out a fox, cat, core hound, spirit beast (bear) all on the 80 dummy and they were all doing about the same damage (1100-1200dps). My cunning pets were doing about 10-15% less.
Your cunning pets also weren't getting to benefit from Feeding Frenzy. But it's also the combined damage that's important, and that extra focus from Roar of Recovery comes in handy over a long fight.

Who Let The Dogs Out?

[:1]So with the release of "The Shattering" patch we all know that dogs were introduced into the game as tameable hunter pets. Who else here absolutly loves these pets, and if you have one, whats his/her name! I named mine Rexxar. I call him Rex for short. =D
Dunno about "love," but I do have a mastiff named Mabari.
theyre not exactly my favorite pet but i like them way more than crabs, i named mine Hooch :P
They end up a lot smaller than I thought they would. They're basically puppies forever.
I lurve my Rochester lol...
My red is named Droolmaster. I think I will like the damage in PVP, when I get around to playing it. I hope they add other dogs to the family. There are some nice breeds. I really want a bulldog. Might even become my top favorite.
I like him, his name is Pete, after one of my shnauwzers, pretty quick too.
they look dumb. i want a bassett hound. my mastiff is named DirtyDoog
My mastiff is named Sarge.
Oberon.

Is it my imagination or do they sometimes change colors while they're dismissed?

I tamed a red mastiff and named him "Copper," then tamed a red fox and named him "Tod" :D

(Copper and Tod are the two main characters from the Disney movie "Fox and the Hound," an animated movie about how our prejudices get in the way of great friendships.)

Edit:
Oberon.

Is it my imagination or do they sometimes change colors while they're dismissed?

Some of them do! http://www.wow-petopia.com/family/dog.html
I'm not a huge fan of the dogs. The mastiffs look like the lazy drool-on-everything kind of dogs, and the demon dogs look like... well... demon dogs. Neither really floats my boat.

If they ever add a German Shepard or Greyhound looking dog then I'll jump on the bandwagon.
Sluggo
Wolves still rule!!!

thanks to another one of Blizz's programming oversights, I was finally able to tame one of the oil coated worgs from Borean...best pet skin the game , IMO.

I call him Midnight (for obvious reasons).

remind me again which raid buff a dog brings?

Sluggo

Same. I had one of the fiery red demon dogs (previously a wolf) before called Sluggo. He will be renamed and the new Sluggo is one of the proper looking dogs.
I tamed a EPL Blighthound which turns into the Mastiff model.

I named him "Butch", and he is awesomesauce on whole wheat toast!

10% Attack Power, so it should free up a talent point from True-Shot Aura if you're running one of these as MM spec.

I don't think so.

My BF's new human hunter has a mastiff named "Rupert," which I think is awfully cute.

Their jowls flap too much for me, though.

"Call of the Wild

Instant 5 min cooldown
Your pet roars, increasing your pet's and your melee and ranged attack power by 10%. Lasts 20 sec."

What am I missing here?
The fact that Call of the Wild has a 5 minute cooldown, 20 second duration, and only affects you and the pet. Trueshot Aura is always active and provides 10% AP to the entire raid (and stacks with CotW).

Hunter macros

[:1]Since the old stickies are gone, and everything I find is old pre cata stuff.

What are the key macros you need now?

I remember a few for disengage and wingclip or the like were nice to have (put all your melee on one button, etc)
#showtooltip
/cast !Eagle Eye

Amazed, you will be.
not needed but i like using it
#showtooltip

/cast [target=focus,exists,nodead] [target=pet,exists,nodead] Misdirection

/raid ~~~Misdirection to %f~~~

/p ~~~Misdirection to %f~~~

basically if you have no focus it will md your pet and if u do it will md your focus and annoucne in party/raid
^ I hate macros like that.
The ones that tell everyone what you're doing.

Especially for MD.
there was a hunter in my guild in Wrath who'd set up his macro for party, raid, AND hunter chat for the guild (one of those custom channels no one uses) and would spam it, hard core.

No one really cares to hear about you MD'ing the tank every cooldown. Gosh.

Same goes to you healers who have macros for rezzing people.
Trying to make a survival hunter macro that will do black arow, explosive shot, and steady shot but I cant get it to work.

I havent made a macro in about 2 years so im super rusty
Is kill Command on the GCD? If it isn't couldn't you macro it to all our shots?

Lock and Load

[:1]Hey Hunters,

I just have a quick question regarding lock and load..

Seeing as how our GCD is now a flat one second.. and the Explosive Shot debuff lasts exactly two seconds (3 ticks).. if I cast, for example:

Explosive Shot
Arcane Shot
Explosive Shot

Perfectly, one after the other.. would the second Explosive Shot not overwrite the last tick of the first Explosive Shot? (Seeing as how the new debuff is applied at the exact moment the old one is doing its final damage)

I assume is doesn't end up clipping.. I was just wondering if someone could help me understand why.

Thanks!
It doesn't clip it because the two full second GCD's cover the entire 2 second duration of the dot.

Explosive shot
1 second
Arcane shot
1 second (DOT from first Explosive shot is now over)
Explosive shot

Also....you don't want to throw that arcane shot in there anyway. You are better off dps wise throwing a Cobra shot in between or even a kill command if you need to bleed focus. You don't want to waste a Lock and Load proc on an Arcane Shot.

Frostheim's Survival Shot Rotation guide includes an entire section on this.

http://www.warcrafthuntersunion.com/2010/11/cataclysm-survival-sv-hunter-shot-rotation/
You wouldn't do use an arcane shot at all, its a waste of the lnl, you weave a cobra shot in between each shot as long as it doesn't cap your focus, which it shouldn't if your using it.

So you would use explosive shot>cobra>exp>cobra>exp>arcane dump or kill command
I realize that I wouldn't want to use an Arcane Shot ;)

I was just using it as an example because it made my explanation easier.

I'll change it to:

Explosive Shot
Kill Command
Explosive Shot

Also, I appreciated that timeline Darkfist, however.. my misunderstanding comes right at the end..

"1 second (DOT from first Explosive shot is now over)
Explosive shot"

Those two things happen at exactly the same moment (Because the damage is applied right as the debuff fades.. which is exactly 2 seconds after the first shot.. which is exactly when you will fire your next Explosive Shot. The new latency queue system makes sure this is exactly every GCD), so whats to say the damage does not get missed? It just confuses me because it is at the EXACT same moment in time.. and I'm not sure exactly how the game code handles a situation like that.
The Dot takes exactly 2 seconds to tick it's full duration.

Your 2 global cooldowns last exactly 2 seconds.

The 2 global cooldowns last the full amount of time that your dot takes to tick. You aren't even ABLE to fire the second Explosive Shot until the moment that the first one applies it's last tick of damage.

You are reading the timeline incorrectly and that is why you are confused.

1 second
DOT from first Explosive shot is now over

Those are the 2 things that happen at the same moment. The next moment is when your 2nd Explosive shot would be fired. This would be AFTER those previous 2 things happened.

1. The First Explosive shot expires applying it's last tick of damage and simultaneously your cooldown expires allowing you to fire another explosive shot.

2. You fire another explosive shot.

The 2nd Cooldown lasts all the way up until the last tick of damage is applied...therefore you can't fire that second Explosive shot until after that last tick of damage.

Does that make sense?
Kind of, I'm just thinking more on the server end, with the new queue system.. allowing your pre-queued Explosive Shot to apply the new damage/debuff at the exact moment the old one is doing it's final tick.

Obviously it works, that's why all 3 ticks are being accounted for. I'm thinking it might be possible that the new anti dot clipping system allows for the final tick to apply damage and the new debuff is still applied, seeing as how the first tick of the new Explosive shot is direct damage, and the other two ticks are from the debuff. (Assuming they line up in the exact same millisecond of time)

Sorry if I'm making anyone angry >.> I just really enjoy figuring out the math/mechanics of specific parts of the game.

It's probably safe to move along from this topic <.<

This is where you are in error. These two things don't happen at the same moment.

At the moment the old one is doing it's final tick your cooldown is still in effect. It isn't until the moment following this that the pre-queued Explosive Shot applies the new damage/debuff.
Fair enough. It would mean the two effects are literally back to back at least.

Spiders bark o.O?

[:1]Every so often my spider will make a bark or dog wimpering noise...?

I had no Idea Hunters could train there pets to mimic other animals lol...

Anyway to fix this rofl..?
you do know that you are a worgen, right?
you do know that you are a worgen, right?

roflmfao
Nobody likes barking spiders... lol

[for those who don't get the irony of the OPs plight, "barking spiders" is a referance to "farting"]

new glyphs i'ld like to see to go with...

[:1]blizzard's " cough" improvement to hunters...

glyph of dramatic death...gives you a random death scene after being killed by someone,

glyph of hungry rats... SOUTH PARK/KENNY you get the picture,

glyph of easy mark...auto shouts location of where you are to other faction so you aren't wasting their time trying to find you.
Actually glyph of hungry rats modding snake trap would be a fun minor, imo... now I'm gonna let this thread die.
Glyph of wayback machine. Give me the 10 seconds I wasted reading this back. (even though I'd only waste them)

A few hunter class questions

[:1]Hey everybody! New to Cataclysm but not new to WoW. I've taken a break and am wondering if this forum could answer some of my questions. I'm interested in leveling up a hunter because I think the overall class lore and mechanics are pretty cool and exciting. I've played a Mage/Druid/Warrior before and am looking for something different.

On with the questions:

1. How many keybinds/macros are required to play the class in an efficient way? On my warrior, it seemed like I had to spend around 2 hours to get up macros and keybinds. On my mage, I only really had keybinds which was nice as the setup wasn't that extensive.

2. Does operating a pet require a lot of micro-managing? I really think leveling and playing with a pet is cool but does it get old having to manage one all the time?

3. How is the new focus system? I know it works kind of like energy and when I played my rogue it seemed like most of the time in dungeons I was "Not enough energy". I felt like I had to have an internal 2-second clock in my head so I would know when my next tick of energy came to do another backstab or something.

Anything else you'd like to add? Thanks everybody for the answers. I appreciate your time.

There is no set number. It really depends on your play style and what kind of mouse/keyboard you have. I honestly only run with a cancel deterrence aura macro, engineering gloves macro, and a misdirect macro. Again, that's just me. There are others who have a macro for every single thing.

2. Does operating a pet require a lot of micro-managing? I really think leveling and playing with a pet is cool but does it get old having to manage one all the time?

It really doesn't. You can either have a pet attack macro bound to your opening shot (serpent sting is common for raids) or press ctrl+1. Personally, I can't imagine leveling without a pet. I honestly love it. I did not find them cumbersome really, but they sometimes get in the way as you're trying to loot. That's about it.

3. How is the new focus system? I know it works kind of like energy and when I played my rogue it seemed like most of the time in dungeons I was "Not enough energy". I felt like I had to have an internal 2-second clock in my head so I would know when my next tick of energy came to do another backstab or something.

It takes a little getting used to, but I can't fathom ever going back to mana. There is literally zero down time with leveling, raids, and 5 mans. PVP is another story, but it's all about adapting. We're not the "hot class" when it comes to arenas at the moment, but it's all perspective. You have a controlled way to gain focus back and many of your "OMG" buttons (feign death, disengage, deterrence, kill shot) cost zero focus. A real bonus.
I have every move i use bound, and thats alot including traps and whatnot. not much in the ways of macros

pets 95% of the time is set on auto attack and forget about it, sometimes you gotta tell ti to stop attacking or switch targets

focus is fine, imagine playing a distance rogue.
