Choosing Your Race

[:1]Hey, so a short intro. A little while ago I decided to start a video guide channel on various things for completely new WoW players. My primary goal is take a class/spec (chosen by others), level it, and along the way provide a review of the class, it's strengths, weaknesses, how much fun/un-fun etc...

So the first class is going to be hunters, and I wanted to start off by answering a common question for many people who roll a new class (especially if it is their first) and that "What race should I choose?" I normally just choose what I feel like playing, but some people would like to know what's optimal. So I made a short post on my blog (also posted below) about useful racials from each race (for hunters) and explained how they can be used, and what aspect of gameplay they are good for (PvP or PvE).

Here's the blog post:

Here's the video channel I'm using if you are interested in future videos.

Orc

Blood Fury - Activate to increase attack power and spell power by an amount based on level/class for 15 seconds. 2 minute cooldown.

Good ability for PvP or PvE, not much to say about it, just use it when you want to do more damage.

Hardiness - Reduces duration of stun effects by 15%.

Decent PvP ability. The less time you are stunned, the less time you are standing still getting beat on by a warrior or rogue, and of course the more time you spend doing damage.

Command - Damage done by Death Knight, Hunter, Shaman and Warlock pets increased by 5%.

You know a racial is good for you when your class's name is in description. Particularly good if you plan on going with Beast Mastery.

Forsaken:

Will of the Forsaken - Removes any Charm, Fear and Sleep effect. 2 minute cooldown.

I will admit that this is mostly a watered down version of Every Man for Himself listed above. If your choices comes between the pros and cons of these two racials go with the human one-unless of course you like the next ability. Otherwise it's a PvP ability, it doesn't share a cooldown with your PvP trinket (does the same thing as Every Man for Himself) but it does put it on a 30 second cooldown.

Cannibalize - When activated, regenerates 7% of total health and mana every 2 seconds for 10 seconds. Only works on Humanoid or Undead corpses within 5 yards. Any movement, action, or damage taken while Cannibalizing will cancel the effect.

Good ability for healing in between fights in PvE, or PvP. Can even be used to heal yourself in combat if you get a good chance for it.

Blood Elf:

Arcane Torrent - Activate to silence all enemies within 8 yards for 2 seconds. In addition, you gain 15 Focus, 15 Energy, 15 Runic Power or 6% Mana. 2 min. cooldown.

The silence on this ability will rarely concern you, since you don't want to be close to enemies when you fight them. But if you happen to be near them it can come in handy, or if you are fighting a melee class that casts spells, like Paladins, Shamans or Deathknights. What you will be more concerned with is the focus you get when you use the ability. 15 focus isn't a whole lot, but it can be the difference between using an important ability that could possibly help you win a PvP fight, or survive a PvE situation.

Magic Resistance - Reduces the chance you will be hit by spells by 2%.

Overall decent passive for PvP, and in some PvE fights.

Goblin:

Rocket Jump - Activates your rocket belt to jump forward. 2 minute cooldown, shared with Rocket Barrage.

Nice ability to jump away from an enemy that has closed in on you, or jump up to a target that has run around a corner to avoid you.

Rocket Barrage - Launches your belt rockets at an enemy, dealing X-Y fire damage. (24-30 at level 1; 1654-2020 at level 80). 2 min. cooldown shared with Rocket Jump.

Decent additional burst considering it's instant cast, and costs no amount of resources. You must decide whether you will use this or the jump, you cannot use one and then the other right after as the share cooldowns.

Time is Money - Cash in on a 1% increase to attack and casting speed.

Small damage advantage in PvE, not that useful in PvP.

Human: Gonna point out here that I will be ignoring melee weapon skills (Swords, Maces, Axes, etc..) because they are pretty much irrelevant to hunters.

Everyman for Himself - Removes all movement impairing effects and all effects which cause loss of control of your character. This effect shares a cooldown with other similar effects, 3 minute cooldown (think this is actually a 2 min cooldown).

This is a great ability for PvP, removing thing such as stuns or fears, as well as roots that keep you from moving, specifically for hunters keeping you from getting away in most cases. Not particularly good in PvE situations.

Dwarf:

Stoneform - Activate to remove poison, disease, and bleed effects; +10% Armor; Lasts 8 seconds. 2 minute cooldown.

Good PvP ability, several classes rely on things like poisons, disease, and bleeds not only for damage, but for other effects, such as slows. This will remove the poisons, and those effects as well.

Gun Specialization : Increases chance to critically hit with Guns by 1%.

Overall good hunter ability since guns will be a common weapon.

Night Elf:

Shadowmeld - Activate to slip into the shadows, reducing the chance for enemies to detect your presence. Lasts until cancelled or upon moving. Any threat is restored versus enemies still in combat upon cancellation of this effect, 2 minute cooldown.

Good in PvP and PvE
PvP: This can be used to drop your enemy's target. Meaning that they will be no longer be able to target you until they can see, therefore they can't use any attacks on you until they see you again, and have you re-targeted. This can really disrupt opponents. Also good for ambushing people at Battleground objectives.

PvE: In these situations it can help you drop "aggro" this is the value that determines whether or not a mob attacks you over another unit, and it's based actions done in combat with the mob. Note that unless someone gets higher aggro then you before Shadowmeld breaks the mob will attack you as soon as you leave it. This can also be used if you are alone, and aggro something you don't want to fight, you can use it and the mob will leave combat and go back to where it came from.

Quickness - Reduces the chance that melee and ranged attackers will hit you by 2%.

Overall good ability to help you survive, but primarily useful in PvP.

Draenai:

Gift of the Naaru - Heals the target of X damage over 15sec. The amount healed is increased based on the caster's Spell Power or Attack Power, whichever is higher. 3 minute cooldown.

Since hunters do not have any heals this ability can be good for keeping yourself alive. Though it heals over a period of time, and not all at once, if you kite well enough to stop incoming damage you should live long enough to get the full effect, try to use it early to prevent coming close to death, instead of waiting till you are inches from dieing and still being attacked. In a PvE situation you can use this, when a healer is incapacitated, to either heal yourself, or the tank and save the group (and who doesn't like that?).

Heroic Presence - Increases chance to hit with all spells and attacks by 1%.

Hit chance is very important to damage dealing classes and specs, and though this effect may be small by itself, it will help you at later levels to reach the "hit cap." This is where you have enough hit rating to not miss bosses with your special abilities. This is the first thing you will want to do later, and this racial can help you get there faster, and therefore allow you focus on other important statistics once you reach the cap. Useful for PvP *and* PvE, but mostly considered a PvE benefit.

Worgen:

Darkflight - Activates your true form, increasing movement speed by 40% for 10 sec. 3 minute cooldown.

Good ability to get distance from an enemy when you are kiting. Also good for escaping, or even chasing down enemies. Primarily a PvP racial.

Viciousness - Increases critical strike chance by 1%.

Overall good racial for any class.
Sound nervous, might want to get a four loko.
Gnome!! oh wait they're not invited.

Undead!

yesssss..

this
i'll be making a forsaken hunter soon.
im just deciding on male or female
I believe the best hunters are orcs, trolls, and goblins. (Now, I am not talking about PvP.)

I am an orc hunter, but that was before trolls had Berserking. (It used to be something completely different back then.) I never bothered to change races, mainly because that was not available until recently anyway. But, if I were given a free race change, or if I stopped being so lazy, I'd change to troll, just because of Berserking.

In PvP, or for PvP fanatics, of course, racials mean something different entirely.
